8 Reasons Cybersecurity Pros Are Breaking Up with Excel

The Excel Problem

Excel is great for pivot tables and financial modeling. I’ve been using Excel since my first summer job in 1989. Over the years, I’ve done my share of pivot tables, VLookups and some IF statements that would make your eyes cross. The main thing I love about Excel is its flexibility. You can crunch numbers, correlate data sets and format reports for professional presentations. Excel has been right there with me as I have packaged up 7 and sometimes 8 figure Enterprise Software proposals.

BUT, Excel has its share of problems. Some of its greatest weaknesses are that it's one-dimensional, not collaborative, and frustrating for generating on-demand reports. Plus, who really likes seeing #DIV0 all the time? Even though the program was built in 1985, many organizations are still using hundreds of Excel spreadsheets to manage their cybersecurity programs today.

Additionally, using Excel to capture and retain crucial information about cybersecurity compliance controls can get complicated quickly. Using multiple workbooks and complex formulas that dump hoards of private information into file shares and hard-drives can make gathering intel for internal, external, and customer audits sloppy. Not to mention, it can take days and weeks to extract all the necessary information, It's time to break up with Excel and manage cybersecurity a whole new way.
